On Monday, March 3, 2025, in the Rooms of the Management of Education and Financial Inclusion and Gender of the National Commission of Banks and Insurance (CNBS), the conference entitled “Financial Inclusion in Honduras” was held, presented by Dr. Sebastián Auguste, consultant of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), who presented the main results of his research work “Financial Inclusion in Honduras. A case study”.

In the presence of officials and employees of the different dependencies of the institution, the day began with a few words from the Commissioner President of the CNBS, Engineer Marcio Sierra Discua, who highlighted the important role of this Regulatory Entity in the financial inclusion of the country. Next, Dr. Auguste presented a detailed analysis of financial inclusion in Honduras, through data collected by the CNBS and making comparisons with other countries that have similar economic conditions.

As a result, Lower Middle Income countries, similar to Honduras, such as Lesotho and the Kyrgyz Republic, that have overcome financial challenges by banking using new technologies, were analyzed. In this line, Lesotho has achieved greater access to financial accounts, savings in financial institutions and credit from the formal financial system. For its part, the Kyrgyz Republic has made greater progress in mobile money and credit accounts in the formal financial system, specifically, in credit cards.

To conclude, Dr. Auguste highlighted the crucial role of correspondent agents in improving geographical coverage in Honduras, however, he stated that more success stories should be explored at the international level in favor of a regulation that continuously promotes financial inclusion. In addition, he emphasized the importance of adopting a holistic approach to achieve effective results that contribute to the integral well-being of the country.
This initiative reflects the CNBS’s firm commitment to strengthen financial inclusion, promote research, and constantly align its work with international best practices, for the benefit of the Honduran population.
